Caucuses 2020/2021

What is a Caucus?

A caucus is a group of at least 5 Senators who have grouped together and meet to progress a specific interest.

How to Make a Caucus

  1. Think of the purpose of your caucus.

  2. Find at least four other Senators to join your caucus.

  3. Name the Caucus

  4. Write three or more points that detail what you want to do in the caucus. This is called the ‘Statement of Intent’.

  5. Fill out the Caucus Recognition Form.

  6. Get each person to sign the Caucus Recognition Form, and then sign in the Caucus Promoter Space if you want to be the one to formally apply for caucus recognition.

  7. Send the completed Caucus Recognition Form, to the Clerk at student.senate@msu.ie.

  8. The Caucus Promoter shall receive an email stating that the caucus has been either approved or rejected.

  9. Once approved, the Caucus Promoter shall arrange a caucus meeting in which a Caucus Leader must be elected first.

  10. Notify the Clerk at student.senate@msu.ie as to who the Caucus Leader of the caucus is.

  11. Done!

Caucus Name: Academic Affairs Caucus

Statement of Intent

  • Represent the opinions of students on issues relating to academic affairs in the University.
  • Reflect on and critique past policy and plan future policies that relate to academic affairs.
  • To act in a role of co-operation with the Vice President for Education and their work.

Statement of Intent

  • To promote and support the L.E.A.D. Initiative in MSU Student Senate, where possible.
  • To help form MSU policy on political issues and open a much-needed debate and dialogue on these issues in MSU’s governing body.
  • To act as a quality control/check on all MSU policy and activities in relation to Leadership, Engagement, Awareness, and Democracy and to give feedback, criticisms or suggestions where possible

Statement of Intent

  • To review past events and policies that affect Clubs and Societies, the social life of students, charitable causes that the Union pursues, and the community of Maynooth.
  • To promote and engage with events and policies that effect Clubs and Societies, the social life of students, charitable causes that the Union pursues, and the community of Maynooth.
  • To plan future possible policies and events that would affect Clubs and Societies, the social life of students, charitable causes that the Union pursues, and the community of Maynooth.

Caucus Name: Sustainability Caucus

Caucus Leader: Aoife Hynes

Statement of Intent

  • The caucus recognises that this sustainability crisis comes in three parts - the waste crisis, the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis and that these are interlinked.
  • The caucus also acknowledges the role of racism and colonialism in creating our current situation. How the least polluting countries have been most affected by the sustainability crisis. How less powerful nations have been destroyed for resources and how People of Colour are more likely to live in pollution zones.
  • The sustainability caucus addresses the climate, biodiversity and waste crises as human rights issues and will take action as such.
  • The caucus will pursue Union action to tackle these structural and societal issues. We will demand system change."
  • The caucus seeks these changes in a manner that supports Climate Justice whereby the largest contributors to global warming are expected to bear most responsibility and those most affected are given the support they require.
  • The caucus demands that these changes must include a Just Transition for workers in vulnerable industries, such as farmers and peat workers.
  • The caucus will seek to work with and guide the Union in pursuit of sustainable, biodiverse and just future.

  • (b) Reflect on and critique past policy and plan future policies that relate to gender and sexuality issues.
  • (c) Act in a role of co-operation with the Vice-President for Welfare & Equality.
