In this page we explain of some of the terms you will come across during your time both as an Academic Rep and as a student!

 

Advisor - Here in Maynooth we have student Advisors they provide information, advice, guidance and support to both Under and Post graduate students.

Assessment -  How knowledge is assessed against the defined learning outcomes of a course or module

Award - A formal mark of recognition, e.g. degree, diploma or certificate following successful completion of a course.

Bachelor’s - A Bachelor’s degree is a qualification (also known as an undergraduate degree) that normally lasts between 3 and 4 years. This is normally the first degree a student can attain, before master's and a PhD.

Campus - A campus refers to the grounds and buildings where university is located.

Core Module - A module that you must do as part of your course/programme.

Credits - In order to achieve a qualification, students are required to achieve a certain number of credits. Credits are earned on completion of modules. To graduate, students must obtain a certain number of credits.

Restricted deficit - This means you have modules that were not eligible for compensation and means you now have a credit deficit. You can choose to progress to the next year with the deficit, usually in your other subjects but you will have to register to take additional credits to clear the deficit in the next year or before you graduate.

Restricted compensation - You haven’t passed all your modules, but your results are high enough for compensation. This means your progression is restricted: you can only continue in subjects where you’ve earned a result of Pass (P), Pass by Compensation (PC), or Allowed Progression (AP). If you don’t have progression in a subject, you must resist the supplemental exams to continue with it.

Degree Grades -

First Class, 1.1 - 70% and above

Second Class Grade 1, 2.1 - 60-69%

Second Clas Grade 2, 2.2 - 50-59%

Third Class, 40-49%

Dissertation - An extensive essay on a topic selected by the student is called a dissertation. For some students, writing a dissertation during the last year of study accounts for a sizeable portion of the final degree classification. May also be known as a thesis.

Eduroam -  The University uses eduroam as their internet source. This is available on the campus, in the accommodation building and even on Dublin Bus!

Elective Module - In certain courses within MU students have the option to take electives. They compromise, hey may help to broaden your perspective, allow you to interact with students from other disciplines, or help you develop transferable skills for the future in a way that complements your main disciplinary studies.

Extenuating Circumstances -  If there is a serious unforeseen circumstance that prevents you from meeting deadlines or examinations you can use the Registry Exceptional Permission form to extend the deadline of your assignment.

Faculty - A section within the University that specialises in a group of similar subject areas or in one subject areas. There are three faculties in Maynooth University, Arts and Humanities, Science and Engineering and Social Sciences.

Graduate - When a person has completed their degree and received their qualification.

HEA - Is the Higher Education Authority, their responsibility is for the regulation and governance of the higher education system in Ireland.

HEI - Is a Higher Education Institution (such as Maynooth University), is an organisation that provides education beyond the secondary level. This includes institutions like universities, colleges, and institutes of technology where students can study for degrees, diplomas, or other qualifications.

International Student - Is someone who come to study in Ireland whose home/normal residence is outside of Ireland/EU

Erasmus student - student who participates in the Erasmus+ Programme, a European Union (EU) initiative that allows students to study, train, or gain work experience abroad in another participating country as part of their university degree.

Joint Honours Degree - Is when a student combines two subjects ( e.g. Law and Politics) to study for their degree.

Library Cat - Going for a study day in the library or just dropping off a book? Be sure to look out for Seamus the library cat!

MCQ -  Assessment in some modules you are required to complete Multiple Choice Questions. This may be in class or a take home exam online.

Moodle - Moodle is Maynooth Universities virtual learning environment. It is where you can find recourses, access notes from your lectures and tutorials and upload assignments.

Plagiarism - Is when you submit work that is not your own. If you copy someone's work without referring/acknowledgment with the intention of passing it of as your own, that is plagiarism.

Student contribution (Levy) - Every registered student must pay a student levy fee of 150 euros. It is not covered by SUSI or scholarships. The levy goes towards the development of student facilities.
