As per the MSU Constitution;
There shall be an Electoral Commission to regulate and oversee Union elections and referendums.
The Electoral Commission shall have the following functions:
- To provide impartial explanations to the members of the Union on the subject matter of referendums.
- To review the positions and constituencies for the election of members to the Executive and the Student Senate and to report its findings and recommendations to the Executive and the Student Senate.
- To conduct research on electoral policy and procedures and to make recommendations to the Executive as it deems appropriate.
- To provide members of the Union with information on electoral processes, including referendums, and to promote participation in the electoral and democratic processes of the Union.
- To maintain and oversee the electoral register to ensure its accuracy and integrity.
- To establish, maintain, and enforce regulations governing the conduct of Executive elections, Student Senate elections, and referendums, including but not limited to, provisions relating to nomination procedures, campaigning, campaign expenditure, online and offline advertising, the investigation and imposition of sanctions for breaches of electoral rules, and the appeals process in respect of election and referendum results.
