What is the AMLMN-MSU Senate?

The Student Senate is the main democratic and policy-making body within the Students’ Union. It is made up of elected students who represent different faculties, courses, communities and interest groups across Maynooth University and St Patrick’s Pontifical University. The Senate provides a space where student representatives can bring forward the views and concerns of the students they represent, debate important issues, and help shape the direction of the Students’ Union.

A key purpose of the Senate is to ensure that the AMLMN-MSU Executive remains accountable to the student body. Executive officers are required to provide reports to the Senate, which Senators can scrutinise and question. The Senate also debates and approves Union policies and can mandate Executive officers to take action on issues that matter to students. In this way, the Senate gives students a direct role in the governance of their Union, while ensuring that AMLMN-MSU’s policies and priorities reflect the diverse needs and experiences of its membership.
