MSU Statement Against the Termination of the Construction of the Student Centre Levy Project

Maynooth Students’ Union condemns the announcement that construction on the new Student Centre project has been terminated by Maynooth University, following a decision by Maynooth University’s Governing Authority.

We work in partnership with the University at all levels to deliver the best facilities for students. However, while we understand the difficulties faced by the project it is important to state that we did not support this decision and dissented from it at every forum where we are a member.

MSU President Niall Daly said: “I am angered on behalf of the students of Maynooth that the University has taken the decision to terminate the Student Centre project. This project was the flagship project to be funded by the student levy. Students have been paying this levy, in addition to the student contribution, since 2015 and disappointingly none of the student levy funded projects have been delivered in that time. This indicates yet again that students are not being prioritised by the University. While it may be of little consolation to students, MSU has secured commitments of additional facilities while we continue to push for the delivery of a new Student Centre and the other levy funded projects.”

Maynooth Students’ Union is committed to further engagement with the University around this issue and future plans. We will be engaging extensively on the provision of additional social spaces and facilities and the longer-term vision for student facilities.

In discussions with Maynooth University, Maynooth Students’ Union has secured several commitments on much needed student space and facilities, including:

  • Additional social spaces

  • Additional study spaces

  • Meeting pods for student meetings

  • Enhanced furniture in existing spaces

  • Access to microwaves and tea and coffee making facilities

  • Additional parking and a new bus terminus near Phoenix

  • New outdoor gym beside the Courtyard Apartments

  • Extension to the existing Student Centre facility

  • Commitment to a new Student Centre project to be delivered in a 4–5-year timeline

Maynooth Students’ Union remains committed to representing the interests of students and will continue its dedicated work to deliver the critically important Student Centre needed to meet the increasing needs of students and to further enrich student life on campus.
